Princess Diana once shockingly compared her marriage to Prince Charles to a poker or chess game.

While speaking with Martin Bashir for Panorama, the late Princess of Wales was asked why she thinks her alleged extramarital affairs were leaked to the press. The mom of Prince William and Prince Harry said that this was done to discredit her while boosting Prince Charles’ image.

Several years ago, Princess Diana’s phone conversation with James Gilbey on New Year’s Eve of 1989 was leaked. Gilbey repeatedly told the late royal that he loved her and called her darling.

During her Panorama interview, Princess Diana said that after her phone conversation with Gilbey was exposed, she felt what it was like to be outside the net and to not be part of the royal family. Bashir then asked Princess Diana what she thinks was the purpose behind exposing her private phone call.

“It was to make the public change their attitude towards me. It was, you know, if you are going to divorce, my husband would hold all the cards than I would – it was very much a poker game, chess game,” she said.

Bashir then asked Princess Diana about the series of phone calls made by the royal to Oliver Hoare. Prince Charles’ ex-wife was accused of making what was described as nuisance phone calls.

“I was reputed to have made 300 telephone calls in a very short space of time which, bearing in my lifestyle at that time, made me a very busy lady. No, I didn’t, I didn’t… But that again was a huge move to credit me, and very nearly did me in, the injustice of it because I did my own homework on that subject, and consequently found out that a young boy had done most of them,” she said.

Princess Diana’s distrust of Prince Charles started after she found out that he was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
