Why Princess Diana’s Engagement Ring Was Not Approved By Royal Family
Princess Diana’s engagement ring became the face of a massive controversy after it was given to her by Prince Charles years ago.
According to Good Housekeeping, not all of the members of the royal family liked the ring. After all, Princess Anne was one of the first royals to receive a sapphire ring from Captain Mark Phillips. This meant that Princess Diana’s ring wasn’t very rare. It was also featured in a Garrard catalog.
Express journalist Emily Hodgkin claimed that royal engagement rings are supposed to be special because they are custom-made. But Princess Diana’s hand accessory was too accessible to the public.
Some people think that Princess Diana’s choice for a sapphire ring was due to the fact that it reminded her of her mom’s wedding ring. Some royal fans were also convinced that the Princess of Wales chose it because it had the biggest stone.
But whatever her reason was for picking the ring, Princess Diana wore it proudly up until her divorce from Prince Charles. Following her death, Prince William and Prince Harry inherited her jewelry collection, which included the controversial blue sapphire engagement ring.
Prior to her demise on Aug. 31, 1997, Princess Diana wrote in her will, “I would like to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your decision.”
Rumors swirled that Prince Harry chose to keep his mom’s engagement ring first. But he decided to give it to Prince William when he realized just how much his older brother loved Kate Middleton. Prince Harry received his mom’s Cartier watch instead.
Prince William gave Middleton the exact same ring when he asked for her hand in marriage years ago. The couple tied the knot in 2011.
