Why Princess Eugenie Didn’t Become A Duchess Like Meghan After Royal Wedding
Princess Eugenie didn’t become a duchess like Meghan Markle after her wedding to Jack Brooksbank on Oct. 12.
According to Reader’s Digest, there is a difference between a duke and a prince. The former is granted by the reigning monarch. This is how Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, became the Duke of Edinburgh. He was granted the dukedom by his father-in-law, King George VI, on the eve of his wedding day.
Majority of the princes in the royal family are given the title of duke upon marriage or upon coming of age. Prince Charles became the Duke of Cornwall at the age of 4 after his mom was crowned as the Queen.
But there are also some instances wherein a prince doesn’t become a duke as in the case of Prince Edward. His official royal title is known as the Earl of Wessex because he wants to wait until he inherits that Duke of Edinburgh title when Prince Philip dies.
Since Princess Eugenie’s husband is not a royal, Brooksbank wasn’t given the duke title by the monarch. Since he is not the duke, Princess Eugenie cannot be called Duchess. She continues to be referred to as Princess Eugenie, and it is up to her if she wants to be called Eugenie Brooksbank.
Meghan Markle became the Duchess of Sussex since Prince Harry is known as the Duke of Sussex. He is also a member of the royal family.
During a previous interview, the newlywed said that being called a princess is one of the things that bug her.
“How do I play the princess thing? I don’t really. I don’t like talking about it and find it annoying when people say things like, ‘Oh, you’re the princess.’ One of my best friends jokingly says, ‘Hi Princess,’ and I say, ‘Shut up.’ It is one of the things that bugs me the most,” she told The Telegraph.
Based on her answer, it seems that Princess Eugenie doesn’t also mind that she didn’t receive the title of duchess after her wedding.
