A 32-year-old woman in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh was allegedly gang-raped by her husband and four of his friends over the span of nearly two years, authorities said.
The unnamed victim, who was originally from the state of Chhattisgarh, was allegedly subjected to sexual torture between November 2019 and October 2021 in a farmhouse on the outskirts of Indore where the couple lived, Deccan Herald reported, citing police.
The woman's 42-year-old husband allegedly initially forced her into "unnatural sex" with him and then another man, a report by The Times of India said. The victim told authorities her husband allegedly also burned her with cigarettes.
In another instance of abuse, the husband allegedly confined the victim in a room where he and the other man gang-raped her multiple times over four weeks, according to the outlet.
The husband then allegedly called three of his friends to the farmhouse, where all of them gang-raped her for months.
The husband took videos of the months-long abuse, and he and his four friends threatened to post the footage on social media if the victim approached police, the woman alleged in her complaint.
The husband also threatened to kill his wife if she filed a complaint, investigating officer Suman Tiwari said.
The woman was able to leave the house around three months ago and went back to Chhattisgarh to stay with her parents.
One of the accused allegedly followed her and intended to harm her, a police official was quoted as saying in another Times of India report.
However, the woman returned to Indore Saturday and filed a complaint to police in Kshipra.
Authorities have arrested all five suspects, who included one person from Bemetara, Chhattisgarh.
A case against the accused has been registered under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 376 (sexual assault) and 377 (unnatural offenses) of the Indian Penal Code as well as the country's Arms Act.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, according to police.
