Will ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Cast Host The Oscars? Latest Academy Awards MC Rumors

“Avengers: Endgame” doesn’t seem like the kind of movie that would win an Oscar, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be promoted on the telecast. The Academy Awards reportedly want to put the cast on stage for a big appearance.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Oscars won’t have a traditional host after the Kevin Hart scandal. Instead, they’ll have a rotating group of celebrities take on small portions of hosting duties, and the organizers hope to bring in the “Avengers” cast to take on some of that work.

In 2013, the Oscars brought out Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) to present the awards for best cinematography and best visual effects. The presenters apparently got a very positive response because organizers think an even bigger appearance will be good for the show.

THR seems to be implying that the Academy wants the Avengers to do a little more than present one award, but the outlet noted that “specific details are still being hammered out about how the actors who play the popular characters will be incorporated into the 91st Oscars ceremony.”

Also not mentioned was exactly which cast members were being courted. THR mentioned that “an even bigger assemblage” was being put together for this year’s ceremony. Since 2013, Marvel Studios has added quite a few female heroes to their lineup, which they’d surely want to point out since the Oscars take place less than two weeks before “Captain Marvel” hits theaters.

While the Academy Awards don’t typically acknowledge Marvel Studios movies outside of the visual effects categories, they have a connection. ABC airs the award show. Disney owns both ABC and Marvel Studios.

As their ratings dwindle (they hit a new low in 2018 with 26.5 million viewers), the Oscars have been trying to attract more mainstream moviegoers. The 2019 ceremony had announced that there would be a popular film category, which seemed like an attempt to bring in viewers who prefer blockbusters to indies. However, there was so much backlash that the Academy decided not to move forward with the new category.

A big appearance from the “Avengers” cast would likely bring in more viewers, and this would be a great opportunity to promote “Avengers: Endgame,” which hits theaters April 26. There is already speculation that the studio could drop a new trailer during the ceremony.

The Oscars air Sunday, Feb. 24 on ABC.
