Showrunners are confident that Sonequa Martin-Green will be able to balance filming “The Walking Dead” and her new role on “Star Trek: Discovery.” AMC

Sonequa Martin-Green has been cast as the lead in CBS’ upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery,” making her the first black female actress to lead a film or TV show in the franchise. While the news is thrilling to her fans, many are worried about what it means for the fate of her character on AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress remained coy about what will happen to Sasha when the show returns. She told the publication that she wasn’t able to give anything away, but promised story lines on “The Walking Dead” would be “as impactful and powerful and dynamic” as ever.

Showrunner Scott M. Gimple delved into the topic a bit deeper, suggesting that it would be no problem for Martin-Green to balance filming “Star Trek” and “The Walking Dead.” He joked that he had seen her tackle much more difficult things in the past.

“Sonequa Martin-Green can do anything,” he said. “I’ve seen her battle a horde of walkers this year while simultaneously battling a stomach flu that would have had most people crying in the dirt. She can fulfill the duties of a Lieutenant Commander on a Constitution-class starship whilst battling walkers, Saviors, and whatever gets in Sasha’s way. We’ve had to juggle before. I will certainly juggle for ‘Star Trek’ any day of the week. Okay, maybe not on Sunday.”

Sasha’s character does not exist in the “Walking Dead” comics, but they may still provide some insight into what will the future holds for her on the show. Many fans believe that Sasha is representative of Holly, a character in the graphic novel. In the comic, Holly gets revenge on Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) for killing her love, Abraham (Michael Cudlitz). She then sacrifices herself at the sanctuary in an effort to allow her comrades to go free. Holly is returned to Alexandria with a bag over her head, hiding the fact that she’s a zombie. Again, it is not set in stone that this is how Sasha’s storyline will play out in the AMC series but, as EW points out, it’s a possibility.

While Sasha’s fate is up in the air, there are a few things fans can count on seeing when Season 7B of “The Walking Dead” returns. A synopsis for the second half of Season 7 suggests that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) will become aware of just how much work it’s going to take to assemble a force strong enough to take down Negan and his cronies. He and his team will focus their energy on gathering supplies and getting ready. They will encounter setbacks along the way, however.

“The second half of the season will focus on preparing for war and gathering the supplies and numbers to take Negan down once and for all,” the synopsis states. “Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose — to defeat Negan — it won’t come easy.”

New episodes of “The Walking Dead” are slated to air in February on AMC.
