A Wisconsin company announced it would offer its employees microchip implants they could use to scan into the building and buy food at work, reported ABC affiliate-KSTP Saturday.

Three Square Market (32M), a company that supplies software for break room or micro markets, said over 50 employees plan on having the chips implanted. Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is the technology that will be used in making the chip. RFID technology developed by using electromagnetic fields to process electronic information, the same technology used in credit cards. Employees will be chipped Aug. 1.

The reaction on Twitter was horror, with many users mentioning “Big Brother" and passages in the Bible that supposedly warn against microchips.

The company also said the chip can be placed under the skin between the thumb and forefinger “within seconds.”

“We foresee the use of RFID technology to drive everything from making purchases in our office break room market, opening doors, use of copy machines, logging into our office computers, unlocking phones, sharing business cards, storing medical/health information and used as payment at other RFID terminals,” the company said in a statement. “Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.”

The company will partner with Swedish company BioHax International for the chip project. BioHax international has chipped many of its employees.

“It’s the next thing that’s inevitably going to happen, and we want to be a part of it,” 32M Market Chief Executive Officer Todd Westby said.

The Swedish startup Epicenter started offering its employees the option to be chipped earlier this year, reported the Associated Press April 2017.

Being implanted with the chip is optional at 32M. The company said each chip will cost $300 and will not have any GPS tracking.
