KEY POINTS

  • CD Projekt Red Global Community Lead shared the new record on Twitter
  • It is the first time the game crossed 90,000 players since its 2015 release
  • Follows the successful release of Netflix's new show, "The Witcher"

“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” has reached a record number of players on Steam following the release of the new Netflix series.

CD Projekt Red Global Community Lead Marcin Momot posted a graph of lifetime-player numbers for “Witcher 3” since it was released in 2015. The game had crossed over 90,000 active players for the first time since release, even reaching a new record of 94,601 after Momot shared his initial tweet of over 93,000 players. The game has also been the 7th most active played game on Steam.

Before Sunday, the largest number of active players in “Witcher 3” had been set at 92,268 in May of 2015, after the game’s release.

“Witcher 3” originally released to rave reviews in 2015, averaging over a 90 score on Metacritic. It was praised for its massive open world, deep customization, and the sprawling story that saw Geralt of Rivia track down his surrogate daughter Ciri and lost love Yennefer as the ghostly Wild Hunt cut its way across the Continent.

The surge can be partly credited to the success of Netflix’s new fantasy show, “The Witcher,” starring Henry Cavill. It has proven to be a hit with viewers, scoring a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, despite the more mixed response from critics (59%.)

It has also been greenlit for a second season, though no official release date has been given.
