Woman Being Kidnapped At Gunpoint Escapes By Jumping Out Of Moving Vehicle
A woman jumped out of a moving vehicle and managed to escape as a man attempted to kidnap her from a Kroger parking lot in Marietta, Georgia. Cops tracked down the suspect, identified as Randy Harmon, and arrested him on multiple charges, the police said in a Wednesday statement.
The incident occurred on Dec. 6 when the victim, identified as Tomeka Harris, had parked outside a Kroger and gone grocery shopping. Harmon was already inside the parking lot for about 10 minutes when Harris arrived, 11Alive reported.
"Harmon initially parked off to the side, in a remote parking spot, and waited inside the vehicle he was driving," the Marietta Police Department said in a statement. "As soon as Harris parked her vehicle and walked into the store, Harmon relocated his vehicle and parked immediately next to Harris's."
After buying her groceries, the woman returned to her car and was opening the door on the driver's side when Harmon approached her.
Harris said she was placing the groceries inside her Nissan Sentra when the suspect held a gun against her and shoved her inside her own vehicle.
"That's when I realize that I was in major trouble," Harris told Channel 2 Action News. "My life was in danger and I had no idea when he was taking me and what he had in mind to do with me."
Harmon pushed her over the center console onto the passenger seat and tried to drive off with her. However, Harris reportedly fought back. She managed to open the passenger's side door just as Harmon floored the accelerator.
"He slammed on the gas and I went flying out the door, and that's how I got away," the woman reportedly said, adding that she tumbled and fell onto the ground but only sustained minor injuries.
Cops were alerted about the incident and began searching for the suspect and the stolen vehicle with the help of the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD). Officials eventually managed to find Harris' car with all her personal items inside.
A different stolen vehicle was also located the same evening with Harmon behind the wheel. He was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and other traffic-related charges.
Officials later confirmed that the stolen car he was driving was the same one he used to enter the Kroger parking lot.
Harmon is now facing charges of attempted kidnapping, hijacking a motor vehicle and aggravated assault weapon, among other charges.
The woman was praised for taking action and successfully saving herself from the kidnapper. "The Marietta Police Department would like to publicly commend Tomeka Harris for her determination, courage, and resilience in the face of danger," the police department's chief said in the statement.
"Law Enforcement agencies preach RUN HIDE FIGHT and/or AVOID DENY DEFEND regularly, and Ms. Harris absolutely used those same principles while being attacked by a man with a gun," the statement added.
