A 36-year-old mom of two in Orange County, Florida, was killed after two men followed her home and fatally shot her in what authorities described as a "senseless" carjacking attempt, police announced Tuesday.
Roxana Sanchez and a friend were returning home Sunday to Winding Creeks subdivision after a night of leisure when they were followed by the killers, the Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) said in a statement.
The sheriff's office also released footage of the incident showing the killers riding what appeared to be a light-colored sedan that was either white or silver.
Sanchez and her friend pulled into the driveway of the former's residence before the sedan came up behind their vehicle, a police spokesperson said in a press conference.
According to the spokesperson, two Black males got out of the sedan and approached Sanchez and her friend, who was in the driver's seat. They then banged on the car and told them to get out.
"The driver, in fear, put the car into reverse, striking the suspects' car," the spokesperson explained. He said the damage was not severe and just "enough to have a little bit of scuff marks on it."
In response, one of the men started shooting at the passenger side of the vehicle, hitting Sanchez. She was transported to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on the same day.
Police did not reveal if the driver was injured from the encounter.
"This is a tragedy that did not need to happen and should not have happened," the spokesperson said.
OCSO Sheriff John Mina described it as "an act of senseless violence."
"Roxana was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife. And she has been described as the glue that held her entire family together," Mina said in the same conference.
Police are on the lookout for the two men and are encouraging people with any information to help them with the investigation.
"If anyone saw anything or knows anything in this case, no matter insignificant the information may seem, please report it by calling 911," the sheriff said.
