Woman Dies After Being Brutally Raped And Tortured With Iron Rod In Parked Vehicle; Accused Arrested

A 34-year-old woman has succumbed to death after she was brutally raped and tortured with an iron rod inside a parked vehicle, police said.

The unidentified woman from Sakanika, a neighborhood in Mumbai, India's biggest city and one of the most populous in the world, was hospitalized after she was found lying in a pool of blood by the roadside. The incident came to light Friday night after the police responded to a report on a woman being brutally beaten by a man.

An initial investigation revealed that the woman was sexually assaulted and tortured with an iron rod in her private parts. After battling almost 33 hours in the hospital, the woman died Saturday morning, police said, as reported by First Post.

A few hours after the incident was reported, the police arrested the suspect identified as 45-year old Mohan Chauhan on charges of rape and attempt to murder. The charges against Chauhan were upgraded to murder after the woman's death, police said.

The police found blood stains inside the vehicle where the woman was assaulted. The investigators are reviewing the CCTV footage of the area to get more evidence regarding the case.

A special investigation team has been formed to probe the case and the initial evidence revealed only one accused was involved in the crime, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said, as reported by NDTV.

"This incident is highly condemnable... it shames humanity. The accused will be given the harshest possible punishment and a fast-track court will handle the trial," Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said in a statement. "I have directed the authorities to expedite the investigation into the case," he added.

Last month, a minor girl in India who was raped by an unknown suspect died minutes after she gave birth to a stillborn baby in a hospital. The unidentified 17-year-old girl from Ahmedabad, a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat, went into delivery soon after her parents brought her to a hospital with complaints of stomach pain and bleeding. The teen fell into a coma and died minutes after delivery without being able to speak much about the suspect.
