Woman Falls From Cruise Ship Balcony, Lands On Passenger Below And Dies
A cruise ship passenger died after falling from a balcony on the vessel and landing on another passenger on the deck below.
The ship, which is part of the Virgin Voyages cruise line, returned to its port of departure but eventually set sail again with an adjusted itinerary.
The cruise line's Valiant Lady ship departed from Miami on Sunday and was on its way to Roatan, Honduras, when the incident took place.
The woman stood on the balcony and fell onto one of the decks below at around 9:35 p.m., shortly after the ship set sail, according to CBS News. She landed on another passenger, who is reportedly doing well after the incident.
The victim was pronounced dead shortly after the fall, the New York Post reported.
"Yesterday evening shortly after departure there was a medical emergency involving one of our passengers," a spokesperson said. "This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away. We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and our hearts and thoughts are with this person's loved ones."
The cruise ship "was immediately redirected back to Miami, where the team are working closely with local officials," the spokesperson added.
The vessel has since set sail and skipped Roatan as one of its destinations. The spokesperson said the cruise ship would make its way to Cozumel instead of Costa Maya on Wednesday.
The cruise line told People that the change in the ship's itinerary was due to weather conditions and not because of the woman's fatal fall.
The victim's identity was not immediately released.
A Youtube vlogger, known to his followers as The Shiplife, was also aboard the ship when the woman fell to her death. The vlogger posted a video on Monday showing him and his fellow passengers looking shocked on the cruise ship.
"So once again, we are now headed back to Miami, and we'll arrive around 1:30 a.m.," a woman's voice could be heard on the intercom in The Shiplife's video, as per People.
"At the moment, we do not have a departure time for tomorrow after our arrival, but we'll share all relevant information with you as soon as we have updates," the vlogger then said while still visibly shocked like those around him.
"There were rumors stating that somebody had passed away but nothing was confirmed at the time," he later disclosed.
