Woman Found Bloodied, 'Hog-tied' On Oregon Bridge By Police; Suspect Arrested
A police officer found a woman bloodied with her hands tied behind her back on the Yaquina Bay Bridge south of Newport, Oregon. The attacker, who was arrested just hours later, had another outstanding warrant for assault.
The cop was in the area for work when he heard the woman crying for help at around 11 p.m. on Oct. 21, the Newport Police Department said in a release Tuesday, as per KOIN. The woman had blood on her face and her hands were "hog-tied" behind her with rope and shoelaces, authorities said.
"The Officer contacted the person yelling for help and observed they had blood all over their face and head, a laceration to the back of the head, and their hands were tied tightly behind their back," the release said.
The officer immediately transported her to a nearby hospital via ambulance for treatment of her injuries.
Four hours after finding the woman, the police arrested a suspect, identified as 34-year-old Thomas Brannies, at around 3 a.m. on Oct. 22 based on the information given by the victim and witnesses, KPTV reported.
Lincoln County deputies arrested Brannies after spotting his car at a JC Thriftway parking lot.
During the investigation, cops found the pair went "down a discrete trail off of the main pathway within the Yaquina Bay State Park" Friday night when the woman was attacked, as reported by The News & Observer.
"Witnesses confirmed Brannies and the victim had entered the park together and Brannies returned later without the victim," the police said, according to the outlet.
The unidentified woman told the cops the accused struck her in the head with a weapon and tackled her to the ground. She allegedly said Brannies told her not to fight back or she "would continue to be assaulted."
Brannies tied her, took all of her belongings, and fled the scene, leaving her injured, the woman said. She later managed to free her legs from the ties and found her "way out of the park and onto the bridge," reports added.
Cops also found the victim's stolen items in the accused's vehicle while arresting him. He was booked at the Lincoln County Jail on 5 separate charges of assault, kidnapping, theft, unlawful use of a weapon, and a misdemeanor warrant. His bail was set at $500,000, as per records.
Brannies also had a previous outstanding warrant on an assault charge, officials revealed.
