A woman was arrested Wednesday for physically torturing her house help and keeping her in captivity for years.

The 29-year-old house help, identified as Sunita, was rescued by police in the Indian state of Jharkhand on Aug. 22, according to news agency ANI. She was then sent for medical treatment.

The police registered an FIR against accused Seema Patra, a leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The FIR was filed on the complaint of Vivek Anand Baskey, a government employee, who revealed chilling details of the torture and physical abuse faced by Sunita at the hands of her employer. According to the FIR, Baskey received a message from Patra's son Ayushman who narrated the 29-year-old maid's ordeal and shared pictures of her bruises, Firstpost reported.

Patra had reportedly kept the house help imprisoned for several years. She used to thrash Sunita regularly with iron rods, burnt her, and kept her hungry and parched for days.

Patra allegedly subjected the tribal woman to "punishment" for years for unknown reasons, according to Hindustan Times. The FIR also read that Patra admitted her son into a psychiatric center after he started complaining about her horrific actions against the house help.

A video of Sunita in which she can be seen lying on a hospital bed in a horrific condition has gone viral on social media. The video shows her teeth broken and bruises on her body as she attempts to talk with a person.

Twitter user The Dalit Voice shared the post and said, "The brutality that happened to this tribal woman in Jharkhand is extremely painful, for eight consecutive years she was imprisoned and tortured, her teeth were blown out, she was given urine, she was burnt with iron rods several times."

Sunita recorded her statement before the court Tuesday, sources told Firstpost.
