A man in India allegedly starved his newly-wed wife and beat her black and blue after she refused to sell her jewelry.
In a statement given to police Thursday, the 31-year-old woman said she was subjected to assault and torture for more dowry. Recounting the ordeal before local media Saturday, the woman said her husband brutally thrashed her after she opposed his decision to sell her jewelry. The incident took place in the southern state of Kerala, Times Now News reported.
"Three days into the marriage, Jipson [husband] and his mother started pressing me to ask for money from my family. He also wanted to sell my gold to buy an apartment. I kept saying no and he started threatening me. Initially, the harassment was verbal. He used to call me bad words, saying he will lock me up in the room. Later on, he started beating me black and blue. At night he closed my mouth and thrashed me in the abdomen and back. I could not even cry..," she told The News Minute.
"They made me starve without giving food as I stood against selling the gold from my marriage," she added.
The woman’s father visited her husband’s home on July 17 to question him about the harassment. However, the man allegedly thrashed his father-in-law, breaking his leg and rib bone.
"He pushed me onto the ground. It was an uneven surface and my head got injured. Then his father stamped on my leg. I remember hearing a sound, but lost consciousness. I could feel them beating my chest and face," the woman’s father told local media.
The victim said that she is sharing her ordeal so that other women don’t face similar harassment.
"He was married earlier. That woman left him due to similar torture, but we did not know that. He will possibly get married again. I want no one else to suffer what I went through," the woman told The News Minute, adding that she will be legally separating from him.
It wasn’t clear if any action has been taken against the husband yet in the case.
