A woman in England suffered burns so severe that her skin looked like "burned chicken" after she slathered herself with carrot oil instead of sunscreen while sunbathing.
During a family day trip to the beach in Southport, North West England, Laura Bevin applied the zero SPF carrot oil onto her skin to achieve a golden summer glow. However, ditching the sunscreen didn't bode well for her as she suffered third-degree burns after the seven-hour sunbathing stint, Manchester Evening News reported.
Bevin said she slathered her 5-year-old daughter, Millie, with sunscreen containing SPF 50 whilst she herself used a carrot oil tanning spray. She added later that night she was forced to sleep on her duvet cover because her legs were paining, and days later, blisters erupted on her left leg, one of which was the size of a satsuma, the outlet reported.
In a horrifying description of her ordeal, Bevin said her "crispy" legs looked like "burned chicken skin," and even sounded the same when it cracked.
When Bevin visited a hospital, staffers there scraped off some of her burned skin, applied a cream, and bandaged her leg up, according to media outlet Tyla.
"When I went back the doctor removed a flap of skin that looked like chicken skin you get on a Sunday roast, but burned. It sounded exactly like chicken skin too," Manchester Evening News reported.
After examining her, the doctors said she might need a skin graft after examining the flaky skin in the affected areas. Bevin is now issuing a warning for other people to use sunscreen while they are outside.
"I do feel self-conscious being so pale because I think everyone looks a bit better with a tan, especially next to them as they're so brown. My mum and sister are really brown and they were using the carrot oil, whereas I'm really white. I don't know what I was playing at. I thought 'I won't burn, I'll just get a nice color' but obviously not. I kept smothering Millie in factor 50 suncream not realizing I was basically cooking myself," Bevin told Tyla. "I didn't blister straight away, I was just red. I looked like a Drumstick Squashie sweet or lolly."
