World Animal Day: History, Significance And Quotes
World Animal Day or World Animal Welfare Day is observed every year on Oct. 4 with an aim to "raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe."
The day also marks the feast day of Francis of Assisi, who was regarded as the patron saint of animals.
First celebrated in 1925 by cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann, World Animal Day focuses on creating awareness about the effects of human behavior on animals.
"It's celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith, or political ideology. Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognized as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare," the official website of World Animal Day states.
