Created by the World Heart Federation and World Health Organization in 1999, World Heart Day is observed on Sept. 29 every year with an aim to raise awareness of cardiovascular health and stroke prevention.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including stroke and heart disease, kill 18.6 million people around the world every year. Smoking, diabetes, obesity, air pollution and high blood pressure are some of their major causes.

The best way to keep one's heart strong and avoid CVDs is by following a healthy diet, exercising on regular basis, reducing alcohol consumption and saying no to tobacco.

On this occasion, here are a few quotes that highlight our current problem with CVDs and promote healthy living (Courtesy: Brainy Quotes).

  • "The medical literature tells us that the most effective ways to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and many more problems are through healthy diet and exercise. Our bodies have evolved to move, yet we now use the energy in oil instead of muscles to do our work." — David Suzuki
  • "Obesity in children is growing out of control. A big part of this is economic. Fake foods are more affordable. It's enticing people to eat more because they think they're saving money when they're really just buying heart disease." — Jillian Michaels
  • "I'm still not comfortable recommending that people eat saturated fat with abandon, but it's clear to me that sugar, flour and oxidized seed oils create inflammatory effects in the body that almost certainly bear most of the responsibility for elevating heart disease risk." — Andrew Weil
  • "Think about it: Heart disease and diabetes, which account for more deaths in the U.S. and worldwide than everything else combined, are completely preventable by making comprehensive lifestyle changes. Without drugs or surgery." — Dean Ornish
  • "I really do believe that America has this weight problem — obesity issues — and we have all these diseases that we get — heart disease, cancer, diabetes, autoimmune diseases - that are primarily lifestyle diseases." — John Mackey
  • "We're in a situation now where weight and extreme weight and heart disease is the biggest killer in this country today." — Jamie Oliver
  • "Seeds and nuts are indispensable for cardiovascular health. The protective properties of nuts against coronary heart disease were first recognized in the early 1990s, and a strong body of literature has followed, confirming these original findings." — Joel Fuhrman
