World Wildlife Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the planet's plants and animals. The United Nations General Assembly designated March 3 as World Wildlife Day in 2013.

According to data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are critically endangered. Nearly 30,000 more are understood to be endangered or vulnerable. The estimates suggest that over a million species are threatened with extinction.

The theme for this year is "Safeguarding key species for ecosystem restoration." Last year's theme was "Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet."
