The main event for Wrestlemania 35 next year just might be a women's singles match.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the plan is for Ronda Rousey to take on Becky Lynch in the main event of WWE's flagship event which takes place April 7 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, WrestlingNews.co reported.

The two women's champions were initially supposed to face each other in a brand supremacy match at Survivor Series this Sunday and were building up their feud with regular back-and-forths on social media.

However, a legitimate injury to Lynch during a melee on Monday Night Raw this week that resulted in a broken face and a concussion, ruled her out with Charlotte replacing her on the card.

And Meltzer claims chairman Vince McMahon made the decision to postpone their fight to Wrestlemania as the headliner instead. If that is the case, it would be a historic moment for women's wrestling as a female superstar has never headlined Wrestlemania before.

Most recently, the first-ever all-women pay-per-view took place last month while the first-ever women's Royal Rumble headlined the annual January event this year. A number of gimmick matches with women have also taken place for the first time in recent years and Charlotte was hopeful that women would eventually main event Wrestlemania.

"I hope right around the corner," Charlotte told GameSpot in June. "I hope New Jersey/New York. I don't know."

"When all this started, obviously the women's evolution has been going on for years but just in the last three years you've seen so many firsts from Hell in a Cell, from Money in the Bank, Elimination Chamber, Royal Rumble, main eventing Raw [and] Smackdown, I think the WWE Universe, when they hear, 'Oh, the women are main eventing,' they don't even think it's a big deal anymore because it's happened so much. So, I do think Wrestlemania is right around the corner," she said.

Interestingly, Charlotte was expected to be the one getting the big match with Rousey at Wrestlemania due to her accolades and wrestling pedigree. But with her taking on Rousey this weekend instead, and the rising popularity of Lynch as an anti-hero, it seems plans have changed.

If the reports are true, the injury to Lynch caused by an inadvertent strike by Nia Jax may have been a blessing in disguise. The Irish superstar was getting stale as a face but has been getting extremely over ever since her heel turn at SummerSlam in August and might be rewarded with the main event at Wrestlemania now.

She is also continuing her feud with Rousey on social media as she most recently brought up the former UFC bantamweight champion's losses in mixed martial arts, adding a bit of reality into their storyline.

It will be interesting to see how a potential match would be booked though.

They were only facing each other this weekend as Survivor Series is traditionally a Raw vs. Smackdown event. But as Rousey currently features on Raw while Lynch is the Smackdown women's champion, changes will likely be made in the storyline.
