KEY POINTS

  • Gronkowski nears WWE deal
  • Gronkowski could still return to NFL
  • WWE debut of Gronk could happen at Wrestlemania 36

Rob Gronkowski will be doing familiar tackles although it will no longer be in the NFL. The 30-year-old former NFL player is reportedly on the verge of joining the WWE, a move that hardly comes as a surprise. Several athletes made the jump to the wrestling ring and it appears such has lit interest in the former New England Patriots player.

According to a report by WWE on Fox, Gronkowski is set to sign a contract with the WWE which is expected to crush the hearts of Patriots fans. Most were still hoping to see him change his mind and return to the football field but it appears all that is now water under the bridge.

Gronkowski played nine seasons with the Patriots and was a key figure for Bill Belichick. To his credit, Gronk made 521 catches for 7,861 receiving yards and 79 touchdowns. He played a role in the Pats offense in the three Super Bowl runs and his attitude was something that stood out. Now, he tries to bring the same in the WWE ring. For those who may not know, this would not be a first for the 42nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

It was during Wrestlemania 33 where Gronkowski played a role in one of the cards. It was during the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal where he got his first taste of wrestling action. He helped Mojo Rawley overcome Jinder Mahal and most had wondered if the three-time Super Bowl champion would make the jump to the WWE. From the looks of it, that could be happening soon.

With the contract signing still up in the air, there is no official word for now on when Gronkowski would be making his WWE debut. However, a grand coming could be at Wrestlemania 36 which happens on Apr. 6. He could take part in the same Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal and come out victorious this time around. It would be a fitting entry for the former NFL player although this should be treated with a grain of salt for now.

There is also the question on the type of contract he would agree to. Last Aug. 2019, Gronkowski said he was open to participating in matches but not on a full-time basis, CBS Sports reported. He mentioned the WWE Royal Rumble as a match he wanted to participate in but he was not among the 30 participants in the battle royal. Hence, could the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal suffice instead? We will know soon enough!
