  • Rumors of splitting the Mysterios has been confirmed by a prominent insider
  • A potential feud with father will test Dominik Mysterio's ring chops
  • WWE has a long history of breaking up tag teams for shock value

The father-son tag team of Rey and Dominik Mysterio are reportedly headed towards a split, according to an insider who has knowledge of the situation.

In a short tweet by Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Podcast and Wrestling Observer Live, he spoke with a source from within the company confirming that the pair is poised for a feud and a subsequent breakup.

This supposedly eventual storyline for the Mysterios has long been teased on weekly WWE programming, and fans have a right to question whether splitting them up is the right move.

Dominik entered the WWE as a sympathetic babyface that stood up for his father during his feud with Seth Rollins, even if he had barely any experience in the ring and in front of such a big stage.

To his credit, he stepped up to the plate admirably and drew a ton of praise from the WWE Universe.

The 24-year-old is taking in as much in-ring knowledge and experience as possible from the best performers that WWE has on the roster, but having Rey as his father is his biggest advantage.

When asked about teaming with his son, the pro wrestling legend is not afraid to admit that he is his son’s greatest teacher.

“It’s kind of cool for me to play the role of teaching my son how to run the ropes and to do certain things and compliment him when he does great. Other times, when he does something wrong, I make sure and point the finger at him. So, I’m probably his biggest critique,” Rey remarked in June via Wrestling Inc.

In this scenario, Dominik will be playing the role of a heel as he tries to separate himself from his father in order to forge his own name in the business.

The problem here is whether he has the chops to pull off a successful heel turn, and the onus is on him to portray himself as a believable prodigal son who wants to fly on his own.

It is no surprise that WWE is even considering breaking up the father-son duo as they have a prolonged history of breaking tag teams for shock value.

From Cyme Tyme’s Shad Gaspard turning on JTG in the Ruthless Aggression Era to Enzo Amore and Big Cass in the mid-2010s, WWE would split up tag teams whether they made sense or not.

This storyline for the Mysterios looks to be a slow burn, and fans can only hope that the company has plans for both superstars beyond simply creating a moment.
