Yankees Suffer Double Injury Blow, Defeat Detroit Tigers 3-1
The New York Yankees’ injury problem got even bigger ahead of their game against the Detroit Tigers as two more key players joined the long list of injured players. The Major League Baseball (MLB) powerhouse won their first game against the Tigers 3-1 on Monday night.
The Yankees’ season did not get off to the best of starts as they lost their first three-game series of the season to the Baltimore Orioles 2-1, but will want to put that right when they face the Tigers in a three-game series, which started Monday.
The New York franchise is facing a major injury crisis after star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton was added to the injury list before the game against the Detroit franchise. He is expected to be out for at least 10 days with strained left biceps.
The former record holder for the largest contract in MLB history admitted that it was “unfortunate” but he is glad it happened at the start of the season rather than at the end. There was a slight hint of disappointment after he admitted Monday that he would have rather suffered the strain during spring training, which concluded on March 25.
“It’s unfortunate right now,” Stanton said, as quoted by the New York Times, “but I guess it’s better to be in the beginning than at the end of the year.”
“I don’t like it at all. I just worked for six weeks to get here, plus the off-season, so I’d much rather this would have popped in spring training. But that’s where we’re at. I don’t have to start from scratch when I come back,” the 29-year-old Yankees designated hitter added.
Stanton was not the only casualty for the Yankees going into the game against the Tigers after the team announced that third baseman Miguel Andujar was joining the injured list with a strained right shoulder. The extent of the injury is not fully clear, but it will come as a significant blow to manager Aaron Boone.
The injuries to Stanton and Andujar now take the list of key players, who are either injured or returning from injury to eight heading into the new campaign. They now join shortstop Didi Gregorius, outfielders Aaron Hicks and Jacoby Ellsbury, and pitchers Dellin Betances, C. C. Sabathia, and Luis Severino.
