The New York Yankees have traded Luke Voit to the San Diego Padres, according to reports, in a move that had been expected since the team re-signed first baseman Anthony Rizzo. As the Yankees pursue a championship for the 2022 season, the trade won’t improve their roster for the upcoming season.

In exchange for Voit, the Yankees are receiving pitching prospect Justin Lange. Lange was the No. 34 overall pick in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft.

Lange threw 22 innings in 2021 for San Diego’s rookie affiliate. Having never even played a game in Single-A, the minor-leaguer is likely a few years away from making his Major League Baseball debut.

MLB Pipeline listed Lange as the No. 8 overall prospect in the Padres’ farm system.

Voit is only two years removed from leading the league with 22 home runs in the 60-game 2020 season. The first baseman was one of the Yankees’ most productive hitters when in the lineup, posting an .883 OPS since joining New York in 2018.

Voit had trouble staying on the field. Injuries limited him to 68 games in 2021 and 118 games in 2019. Voit hit .239/.328/.437 with 11 home runs last season.

The Yankees have made two notable trades this offseason. Earlier in the week, New York sent catcher Gary Sanchez and infielder Gio Urshela to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for third baseman Josh Donaldson, shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and catcher Ben Rortvedt.

New York hasn’t made any marquee signings in free agency. There had been rumors at the end of the 2021 season that the team might make a play for a superstar shortstop.

The Yankees' pursuit of first baseman Freddie Freeman also went nowhere.
