The Year of Katy Perry: 'Firework' Singer's Style Evolution in 2011 [PHOTOS]
Katy Perry dominated the charts, the red carpets and seemingly every magazine cover for the past 12 months. The pop sensation certainly had the whole world listening to Firework.
In January, Perry accepted the Favorite Female Artist award at the 2011 People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles. Although this might seem like a can't-top honor, it pales in comparison to the rest of her year. From her sold-out world tour to a hilarious stint on SNL, from black hair to pink, Katy Perry hit every high note. Oh, and she also became the first artist to ever have at least one song ranked in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 for an entire year. Whenever people ask me about having bad reviews, I'm like, 'Have you seen the run I've had? Have you see the numbers?' she told Rolling Stone. Numbers do not lie!
But she is realistic about the pop industry. I'm not a dummy, she said. I know 'California Gurls' isn't going to save the world. But I got a lot of heart from my upbringing and I put a lot of heart in my songs.
Perry has a lot more than heart. She has undeniable sex appeal, even if she had to deal with schoolyard bullies for a time because of it. I started praying for [breasts] when I was, like, 11, she said. And God answered that prayer above and beyond, by, like, 100 times, until I was like, 'Please, stop, God. I can't see my feet anymore. Please stop!' I was a lot more rectangular then. I didn't understand my body. Someone in sixth grade called me 'Over-the-shoulder boulder holder.' I didn't know I could use them. So, what I did was, I started taping them down. How long did I tape them down for? Probably until I was about 19. And, no, I don't have any psychological pain because of it.
The colorful California girl turned 27 this year. How did she celebrate? With a rodeo barbecue, of course; and she wore bubblegum pink chaps to match her hair.
There is no stopping Katy Perry. Despite those pesky divorce rumors, she will not let anything bring her down. The singer has the 2012 Grammy Awards to look forward to next. Her hit single Firework is nominated. I'm very excited because they're nominating 'Firework,' which is really important to me. 'California Gurls' is great and 'Teenage Dream' is fun and nostalgic, but I feel like 'Firework' is doing something right.
Here is a look back at Katy Perry's style evolution in 2011.
