Playtonic Games has opened up on what really caused it to scrap the Wii version of “Yooka-Laylee.” The U.K.-based gaming developer also admitted that the decision to do so was very difficult to make.

Opening up to GamesIndustry.biz, Playtonic studio head Gavin Price revealed that “Yooka-Laylee” for Wii U was not canned because of the impending discontinuation of the console. Price insisted that the main reason for the developer’s decision had something to do with the technical difficulties that transpired.

“As we have shared, it's simply down to unforeseen technical difficulties. Its a testament to the team that we have continued to fully explore every possible option throughout making ‘Yooka-Laylee,’” Price said. "We can assure you this was a hard decision for everyone. Our team has so much combined Nintendo heritage and we're huge Nintendo fans as individuals."

Amid the cancellation of the Wii U version of “Yooka-Laylee,” it was also revealed that the game will be delayed until April 11, 2017. At launch, the game will be available for the Xbox One, PS4, PC, Mac and Linux. Since the Nintendo Switch is not arriving until March of next year, it remains to be seen whether Playtonic’s new game would be available for the new hybrid console at launch.

Although Playtonic has already confirmed that “Yooka-Laylee” is arriving on the Nintendo Switch, Price admitted that they have not thought on how consumers would accept this move yet. In fact, when asked if he expects backers of Playtonic to opt for the Switch over the established formats, he simply said, "We've not even thought abut this. We are focused first and foremost on doing right by backers affected by this decision.”

Early this week, fans were shocked to hear Playtonic’s announcement that it has canceled the Wii U version of “Yooka-Laylee.” Nonetheless, preorders for the title, both in digital and physical formats, have already been opened. Non-Kickstarter backers can preorder the game for $39.99, as per My Nintendo News.
