A 23-year-old man in the Indian state of Maharashtra was arrested after he was caught on security cameras killing his 4-year-old son by throwing him on a train station’s platform, police said Tuesday.

The man, identified as Shakkalsing Pawar, lifted his son, Prashant, and threw him on the floor of Sanpada Railway station's platform no. 4 in Navi Mumbai on Monday morning, local news outlet NDTV reported, citing an official from the Vashi railway police station.

Police said CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced on social media.

The accused and his estranged first wife got into a heated argument over the custody of their son, Pawar said.

After he married his second wife, Pawar had kept the child with him and used the boy for begging at the station and at the Sanpada signal area, next to the Mumbai-Pune Highway, according to the official. Pawar got into a fight with his first wife after she approached him to get her son back, he said.

During the argument, Pawar lifted Prashant and threw him on the platform twice, according to the official. The boy suffered serious head injuries from the throws and was taken to a civic hospital, where he was declared dead.

Pawar was then arrested and charged with murder at Vashi railway police station, authorities said.

Pawar initially lied to officials of the Sanpada police station and claimed his second wife had assaulted the boy as she was angry due to a previous quarrel they had, newspaper The Times of India reported, citing senior railway police inspector Vishnu Kesarkar.

Surveillance camera footage, however, had captured Pawar's actions, Kesarkar said.

A similar incident happened in Melbourne, Florida, in late April when a 30-year-old man admitted to throwing a baby he was caring for on the ground out of frustration.

Cristian Cubillos told authorities he "violently threw" the infant on the floor of a living room on April 27 because he became frustrated with the child's crying.

The child suffered a brain compression, brain hemorrhage and a depressed fracture to the back of his head.

Cubillos initially claimed that the baby had become lethargic and inactive after he rolled over and hit his head, but he revealed the truth after he was informed of the child's injuries. He was later charged with aggravated child abuse as aggravated assault.
