Zach Galifianakis Takes Former Homeless Woman As Date To ‘Hangover Part III’ Premiere: Who Is Elizabeth ‘Mimi’ Haist?
Zach Galifianakis has played many roles on screen, but a lot of fans are not aware of the role he played in rescuing a woman from homelessness. The woman in question is 87-year-old Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist, and thanks to Galifianakis and Renee Zellweger, Haist now has a roof over her head and food on her plate.
News of Galifianakis and Zellweger’s kind actions broke in late February. According to Star Magazine, the comedian befriended Haist, who worked at Fox Coin Laundry in Santa Monica. When he learned that the elderly woman had no family or home he decided to rent an apartment for her. A source revealed that he’s been covering her rent and utilities for two years. Zellweger, who was a patron at the same establishment, helped furnish the apartment and assists Haist in keeping food in her fridge.
Galifianakis is taking his kindness a step further. The actor is bringing Mimi Haist to the premiere of his latest movie, “The Hangover Part III.”
Haist told the New York Daily News that she will be Galifianakis’ date on Monday for the Los Angeles premiere of the third “Hangover” installment. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said. “I like the excitement of it.”
And this isn’t Haist’s first premiere! Zach Galifianakis took the woman to “The Hangover Part II,” as well as “The Campaign.” The 43-year-old actor usually picks his friend up in a limo, even taking her to the after parties where she says she drinks lemon drop martinis.
Haist jokes that instead of being mistaken for his grandmother at the events, she’s mistaken as his girlfriend. She said that she enjoys the odd looks she gets from reporters and fans while on the red carpet, and takes the time to wave at fans taking photos.
Zach Galifianakis and Mimi Haist actually met in 1994. Then an unknown comedian, Galifianakis had moved into an apartment right around the corner from Fox Coin Laundry. Haist had been surviving off tips from customers after being on her own for the past 30 years. Although the actor doesn’t use Fox Coin anymore, the New York Daily News reports that he still visits Haist to take her out for lunch every few weeks.
