KEY POINTS
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic was upset with his team’s decision to bench Dejan Kulusevski
- Sweden went on to lose to France, 1-0
- Kulusevski is one of Sweden's more promising young stars
The veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic shared his thoughts on Janne Anderssen’s strategy regarding Dejan Kulusevski in their recent 1-0 loss in the UEFA Nations League. It was a rotational adjustment from Anderssen that Ibrahimovic found questionable.
"What a f--king joke. Further proof. Incompetent people in the wrong positions that suffocate Swedish football," Ibrahimovic tweeted as translated by Goal.com.
The career of Ibrahimovic has been a successful stretch with the accolades the 38-year-old has hauled throughout his playing days. One of his best stints includes an elite display in Paris Saint-Germain where he played in 180 games and scored 156 goals and tallied 60 assists. This emphasizes that he’s one of the players that knows what he’s doing on the field and holds a strong influence on the club.
When it comes to the rotation of the lineup, it’s pivotal that the team is able to utilize its best assets. One of the brighter spots in the team is how Kulusevski has been performing for the squad. It then came as a surprise that he only came off the bench and saw minimal minutes.
“No, I don't think so. I was shocked. It felt really, really good in training. But unfortunately, that's how football is," Kulusevski said.
Throughout the 20-year-old’s youth career, he’s made 55 appearances with Atalanta Primavera where he netted 17 goals and 26 assists. The lack of playing time made it difficult for Kulusevski to fully display his capabilities on the pitch.
"In this case, I had no separate talk with Dejan, absolutely not. I have not talked to him myself after the game, but if he has said that, he probably thinks so. We'll talk about that. I have not experienced him as very shocked," Andersson said.
The development of players can highly be attributed to the amount of playing time and experience gained playing in action. Despite the snub in their latest loss, Andersson does not deny that Kulusevski has immense talent that can help the team.
"He has done well in training, just like many others. We will see if there will be more playing time on Tuesday. He has great qualities and is a great player and will grow into this eventually,” Andersson continued.
It will be interesting to see how Sweden will adjust in their upcoming match against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League.
