‘13 Reasons Why’ Sequel Should Not Get Greenlit By Netflix?
“13 Reasons Why” became an instant hint worldwide after it was released by Netflix on March 31.
A few days later, rumors started swirling that a sequel could in the works. Last week, Deadline reported that Netflix will soon make an announcement regarding the renewal. The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that the writers are already conceptualizing storylines for Season 2. Additionally, “13 Reasons Why” star Ross Butler left The CW’s “Riverdale” due to his busy schedule. There are rumors that the actor’s schedule will be tight because he will be reprising his role as Zach in the Netflix show.

However, despite the buzz surrounding “13 Reasons Why,” TV Line writer Andy Swift is wondering whether or not a sequel will be a good idea. After all, all the major storylines have already been explored in the first 13 episodes. Swift believes that a second season will be a good idea only if the series would have a monumental shift in tone. Swift added that just because there are a few loose ends in the finale episode does not mean that each one needs to be tied up in Season 2.
The publication also compiled a list of the questions that may or may not be addressed if Season 2 will be a go. This includes the question of whether or not Alex (Miles Heizer) survived his alleged suicide attempt. It is also unclear whether or not Alex shot himself or if it was Tyler (Devin Druid) who hurt him. There are also questions about what Tyler’s real purpose is for bringing a gun to school. In the finale episode, Mrs. Baker (Kate Walsh) and Andy (Brian d’Arcy James) started listening to the tapes so their reaction to them is something that fans are also curious about.
Meanwhile, “13 Reasons Why” book author Jay Asher recently said that he also wants a sequel for the Netflix series. However, he clarified that he only wants to see what will happen to the characters on television and not in a possible second book. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said, “I’d just like a continuation of all those characters. I’m curious as well. What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What’s going to happen to Mr. Porter? I’d thought of a sequel at some point. I’d brainstormed it, but decided I wasn’t going to write it. So I’d love to see it.”
“13 Reasons Why” lead star Katherine Langford, who played the role of Hannah Baker, is also more than willing to reprise her role. However, she and co-star Dylan Minnette, who played the role of Clay Jensen, admitted that they still haven’t heard anything from Netflix. “We don’t know yet. We really don’t. I feel like the world’s going to know before we do, if it happens. I’ll be online and be like, ‘Oh, there’s a second season,’” he joked during their appearance on the “Ellen Show” on Monday, May 1.
“13 Reasons Why” is available for streaming on Netflix.
