A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot by the man he was allegedly attempting to rob in Birmingham, Alabama, Saturday, police said.

The slain teen was identified by police as Chico Guest, of Center Point, Alabama, The Birmingham News reported.

Police said the shooting happened near the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex just before 4 p.m. Saturday.

Officers responded to a report of a person shot at 10th Avenue and 18th Street North, near the DEA and FBI headquarters, Sgt. Rod Mauldin said. Police found Guest unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest when they arrived.

The teenage boy was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Police were also alerted that a person showed up at UAB Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound that day.

According to Mauldin, preliminary investigation showed that Guest and the other wounded person were involved in a robbery when they were shot.

The shooter was the victim of the alleged robbery and was working as a parking lot attendant when it occurred. The parking lot attendant, whose identity has not been released, shot both suspects, authorities said.

The attendant has been cooperative in the investigation of the Birmingham Police Department, CBS 42 reported.

“The surviving wounded suspect and a female suspect are in custody and will be questioned by investigators,” Mauldin said.

It was not clear if the alleged robbery suspects were armed. No other details about the case have been disclosed so far.

The death of Guest is the 11th homicide reported in Birmingham thus far in 2022.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 15 homicides, including the 11 in Birmingham.
