‘Agent Carter’ Season 1 Spoilers: Hayley Atwell Talks ‘Emotional And Psychological’ Part Of Peggy’s New Life Without Captain America
“Marvel’s Agent Carter” Season 1 premiere is just around the corner, and Marvel has released a new behind-the-scenes video to introduce the series to viewers. Set in 1946, the series picks up after Captain America’s apparent “death.” Of course, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) doesn’t know that he is frozen, so she truly believes that the superhero (and the love of her life) is dead.
“She finds herself working at the SSR [Strategic Scientific Reserve],” Atwell explains. “She’s having to go on secret missions herself. One of them in particular is Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) who is, of course, her old friend from the ‘Captain America’ films.”
Agent Carter seems just fine on her own. The video runs through clips of her shooting machine guns and throwing men out of windows. It seems Peggy doesn’t need the boys at the SSR to accept her to get involved in the action. However, it doesn't look like Peggy will have time for romance -- but that doesn’t mean there won’t be an emotional side to “Marvel’s Agent Carter.”
“She has an intelligence about her and a skillset that’s very impressive,” Atwell says of her character. “Yet we get to see the emotional and psychological cost of her character, of someone who’s having to live a double-life.”
Stark will likely be the only one who knows about Agent Carter’s double life. The SSR treats her as a secretary, and another clip reveals that even her roommate doesn’t know who she works for. Peggy pretends to work at the phone company.
