‘Agent Carter’ Season 2 Spoilers: Ken Marino Joins Cast; Is He A Hero Or Villain?

“Marvel’s Agent Carter” Season 2 will have more than one villain. Although Madame Masque (Wynn Everett) will be the villain that takes up much of Peggy’s (Hayley Atwell) time on the ABC period drama, she’ll also face off against a few other bad guys. Ken Marino has been cast as another nemesis, Joseph Manfredi.

Manfredi is “a volatile leader in the Maggia crime syndicate who will help Peggy Carter’s adversaries further their agenda,” Variety reports. Manfredi’s crimes probably aren’t run-of-the-mill mafia business. In the Marvel comics, he was a division leader at Hydra and eventually joined the Red Skull’s Skeleton Crew.

It isn’t clear how much of his comic book history “Agent Carter” Season 2 will keep, but it would make sense to bring in Hydra at this point. Season 1 focused mostly on Leviathan, a Soviet organization. However, with a few years between the end of World War II and “Agent Carter” Season 2, Hydra is likely rebuilding itself.

Marino might not be the first person viewers think of when they hear about a new villain. After all, the actor is most known for his roles on comedies like “Marry Me,” “Party Down” and “Wet Hot American Summer.” However, the producers believe the actor will easily tackle the evil role. “His range is incredible -- he can go from comedy to romance to drama with ease,” executive producers Michelle Fazekas, Tara Butters, and Chris Dingess told Variety. “Writing for him is easy, because he can do pretty much anything. And he used to have a karaoke room in his house, which makes him even more awesome.”

Manfredi and Madam Masque may not be Peggy’s only foes when the historical action show returns in 2016. “People who are fans of the Marvel comic book universe will recognize our villain, and there’s more than one villain,” Fazekas told Entertainment Weekly in July. “We’re certainly taking inspiration from the comic book universe, so anybody who knows that will be rewarded.” Bridget Reagan was also confirmed to return as Dottie, a Soviet spy from the Red Room Academy that trained Black Widow.

Luckily, Peggy will have plenty of friends on her side. Jarvis (James D’Arcy), Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) and Daniel Souza (Enver Gjokaj) are all set to come back as well.

“Marvel’s Agent Carter” Season 2 will return to ABC in 2016.
