KEY POINTS
- Alyssa Milano was not comfortable that many people had access to her vagina during childbirth
- Her birthing experience reminded the actress of being sexually assaulted for a moment
- She went through therapy because she had postpartum anxiety and depression after her delivery
Alyssa Milano got candid about her birthing experience, saying it wasn't easy and it reminded her of her sexual assault experience.
The 48-year-old "Commando" star recently appeared on People's podcast "Me Becoming Mom," where she shared her childbirth experience. According to her, it reminded her of being sexually assaulted for a brief moment.
"I remembered at one point [during childbirth] really not enjoying the fact that lots of people had access to my vagina," she told host Zoë Ruderman, Head of Digital at People. "And thinking to myself, 'Why does — I don't like this. Why does it feel so familiar? I've never had a baby before. Why does this invasive feeling feel so familiar?' That was just a fleeting moment, a tick in time, but I didn't forget about it."
After her delivery, Milano suffered from postpartum anxiety and depression. She went through therapy to understand herself and learn more about the condition.
"After going through therapy after giving birth to Milo and remembering that one moment of feeling like I was being held down and had things being done to me that I didn't want, to me, was very reminiscent of being sexually assaulted," she continued.
The "Hall Pass" star admitted that the experience triggered traumatic memories that she thought she had already buried in the past. She decided to share it because other moms may have experienced the same. She admitted that there was a time when she wondered how much of her postpartum anxiety was due to hormones and her feelings of being out of control.
Milano shares two children with her husband David Bugliari, son Milo Thomas, 10, and daughter Elizabeth Dylan, 7.
Milano has been very open about her sexual assault experience. On her "Sorry Not Sorry " podcast, she recounted when she was abused on set while filming a project.
At the time she was "working hard to break out of the box" after "Who's the Boss." She took on mature roles and filmed intimate scenes, and a man 17 years older than her "took advantage of a moment of complete vulnerability [and] literal exposure."
"[He] put his hand under my underwear and [tried] to force his fingers inside of me," she said. "He violated me on a set with cameras rolling."
She was also among the celebrities who used the #WhyIDidntReport platform after former President Donald Trump questioned why Brett Kavanaugh's accuser waited nearly four years before reporting the sexual assault.
"I was sexually assaulted twice. Once when I was a teenager. I never filed a police report and it took me 30 years to tell my parents," she wrote on Twitter back then.
