Arizona Woman Drove Over Boyfriend After Argument, Claimed She 'Blacked Out'
A Tempe, Arizona, woman was arrested after she ran over her boyfriend with her car, court documents released Wednesday said. The incident took place on the University Drive road on April 21.
According to the court documents received by AZ Family, 40-year-old Vanessa Santillan and her boyfriend got into a disagreement while she was driving. Santillan pulled over the car and her boyfriend exited the vehicle. She then honked her car horn when her boyfriend started crossing the street. He, however, flipped her off and continued walking.
Police said, in a fit of rage, Santillan drove onto the sidewalk and ran over her boyfriend before driving away from the scene. The victim, who suffered injuries to the right side of the body, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment where he received stitches.
During interrogation, Santillan told the police on the phone that she left the scene thinking her boyfriend’s injuries were not "that bad.” She also added that post the incident, she picked up her son and drove him to Northern Arizona University. Santillan also claimed she did not remember hitting the victim and that she had “blacked out.” Police, however, found her vehicle visibly damaged.
The accused turned herself in on April 24 and was charged with “aggravated assault” and “failing to remain at the scene of a collision with injuries.” She was booked into jail with her bond set at $20,000. The investigation was ongoing.
In a similar incident April 24, an Indiana woman killed her boyfriend after she drove over him. According to the probable cause affidavit, 23-year-old Briana Rice and her boyfriend had visited a library where they got into a heated argument. The disagreement continued while she was driving and at one point her boyfriend jumped out of the vehicle. When Rice decided to leave, the victim jumped in front of the car and “that was when she ran him over.” She was arrested and charged with murder, the Chicago Tribune reported.
