‘Avengers: Endgame’ Directors Thank James Cameron After Breaking ‘Avatar’ Box Office Record
“Avengers: Endgame” is officially the box office king. It surpassed “Avatar” as the highest-grossing movie at the worldwide box office over the weekend, but it seems all is well between the directors behind the films.
Cameron posted his message on the official “Avatar” Twitter. “Oel ngati kameie,” he wrote in Na’vi, the language used in his 2009 blockbuster. It means “I see you.”
“I see you, Marvel,” he translated. “Congratulations to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ on becoming the new box-office king.”
Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed “Avengers: Endgame,” posted a message shortly after to tell Cameron that they are big fans of his work.
“To @JimCameron- you're a monumental reason why we fell in love with film in the first place. Thank you for always inspiring us and opening the world’s eyes to what’s possible. We can’t wait to see where you take us next...”
The message included four images or the Russo Brothers watching “Terminator,” “Alien,” “Titanic” and “Avatar” in awe.
“Avengers” has an estimated $2.79 billion, surpassing the $2.789 billion record that “Avatar” has held for nearly a decade. The 2019 movie broke the bank much faster than “Avatar,” which was in theaters for 238 days (34 weeks). “Endgame,” which is still in theaters and earning money, surpassed it in less than 90 days (about 12 weeks).
The re-release, which came out at the end of June, helped push the Marvel Studios movie over the finish line. The new version was only a few minutes longer. It included an introduction from Anthony Russo, a tribute to Stan Lee, an unfinished deleted scene and a “Spider-Man: Far From Home” sneak peek. Fans weren’t particularly impressed with the added footage, but it brought the movie back to many theaters that had dropped it both domestically and internationally.
“Avengers: Endgame” is still in theaters, but it will soon be available to watch at home. It’ll hit digital retailers on July 30 and will release on Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 13.
“Avengers: Endgame” and “Avatar” share the same parent company. Disney owns both Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox.
