Biker Dies After Being Hit On Chest By Low-Flying Peacock
A 34-year-old man in India died after a peacock hit him on his chest while he was riding a bike. The victim died at the scene after his vehicle lost control and rammed into a wall.
The unfortunate incident happened in the southern state of Kerala on Monday, local media outlet The New Indian Express reported. The victim was identified only as Pramosh, who was a private bank employee.
Pramosh's wife was riding pillion at the time of the accident. She has been admitted to a hospital in critical condition, the report added.
The police said the accident happened Monday morning when the duo was on their way to work. The bird, which was flying low across the road, hit the man unexpectedly and coiled itself into the motorbike wheels. After losing control, the vehicle rammed into another two-wheeler before hitting the compound wall of another house.
Though the local people rushed Pramosh to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to injuries. The bird too died following the accident. The rider of the other bike escaped with minor injuries. Besides the police, the Forest Department officials too rushed to the spot and took the peacock's body into their custody.
Calling this an unfortunate incident, ornithologist Nameer P.O. said, "Peacocks are understory birds, not canopy living. They usually fly low and such incidents can happen."
Such birds usually thrive in the underlying layer of vegetation in a forest or wooded area. Peacocks, despite their massive body weight, are known to be swift flyers, due to which a collision can create a huge impact. The area where the accident occurred has rich vegetation and is abundant in peacocks, reported Republic World News.
Many such cases of road accidents caused by peacocks have been reported from other parts of India as well. Last month, a 24-year-old motorcycle rider died after a peacock hit the man in the town of Udupi. The bird was flying across a bridge when it collided with the rider. While the bird died on the spot, while the victim, Abdullah, fell on the side of a divider. He suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, but couldn't be saved.
