Carrie Fisher Autopsy Update: ‘Star Wars’ Actress’ Post-Mortem Examination Put On Hold After Debbie Reynolds’ Death
Conducting an autopsy for “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher has been further complicated after the sudden death of her mother, “Singin’ In The Rain” actress Debbie Reynolds.
The L.A. County Coroner contacted Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd on Tuesday seeking permission to conduct an autopsy as Lourd is the actress’ next of kin, TMZ reported citing sources close to the family.
However, Lourd, who was coping with Fisher’s death at the time, deferred authority to her father, Hollywood talent agent Bryan Lourd. The family’s lawyers contacted the coroner expressing concerns about moving forward with the autopsy but failed to give specific reasons.
Reynold’s death on Wednesday added to the family’s grief and according to the report has further complicated matters about how Fisher’s body will be handled. The report, however, did not specify any further details.
In order to determine the cause of death, in addition to the autopsy, the coroner must have details on what happened on the flight when Fisher suffered a cardiac arrest, the medicines the 60-year-old took and her medical history.
Fisher died Tuesday at the UCLA Medical Center after she had a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles. Best known for her role as Leia Organa, the rebel princess from the “Star Wars” franchise, she also appeared in movies like “Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle,” “The Blues Brothers,” “Postcards from the Edge,” “The Man with One Red Shoe,” “The ‘Burbs,” “Fanboys” and “Hannah and Her Sisters.”
She reprised her role as Princess Leia for the 2015 movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” along with some members of the original cast including Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.
“Carrie was one-of-a-kind…brilliant, original,” Harrison said of his co-star. “Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely… We will all miss her.”
Hamill said the 60-year-old actress and writer played a “crucial role” in his professional and personal life.
“Carrie was one-of-a-kind who belonged to us all- whether she liked it or not. She was OUR Princess, damn it, & the actress who played her blurred into one gorgeous, fiercely independent & ferociously funny, take-charge woman who took our collective breath away,” he said in a statement.
