'Catching Fire' Casting News: Lynn Cohen Cast As Mags, Finnick Odair's Former Mentor, ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel Still HasNo Finnick
The movie sequel to Suzanne Collins "Hunger Games," is continuing on their casting rampage. "Catching Fire" now has Finnick Odair's District 4 mentor, Mags.
Mags will be played by Lynn Cohen, a Broadway veteran. Cohen's character is described as an 80-year-old Hunger Games victor of District 4, and the former mentor of Finnick Odair, the 65th Hunger Games victor.
Cohen isn't known just for her dedication to the New York theater, the actress has also landed memorable roles in Steven Spielberg's "Munich" and Charlie Kaufman's "Synecdoche, NY." Cohen also had a part on "Sex and the City" as Magda, the Ukrainian housekeeper.
While the highly anticipated film has a Mags, the role of Finnick Odair has yet to be locked in yet. Since mid July, "Pillars of the Earth" star Sam Claflin has been the frontrunner to land the victor's role, but no official casting news has materialized. However, Deadline.com reports that with Cohen's casting, Claflin will follow shortly. Claflin reportedly had scheduling problems which according to Deadline, has since cleared up.
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" picks up after Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return home after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games. Their return home is brief though, as the winners must go on a "Victor's Tour" to the other districts. Katniss and Peeta's tour gives them the sense that a rebellion is brewing throughout the districts, meanwhile a 75th annual Hunger Games is being prepped, and it's bound to change Panem forever.
"Catching Fire" will feature a handful of other newcomers. Jena Malone has been cast as Johanna Mason, Philip Seymour joins as Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee and Amanda Plummer as Wiress.
