Cody Simpson got candid about his previous relationship with Miley Cyrus months after they called it quits.
Simpson recalled dating Cyrus in his interview on Australia's "60 Minutes" and said that it was just one of those phases for him, adding that he learned a lot after their breakup. He also said that they split amicably.
"Everything ended fairly amicably," he was quoted by Page Six as saying. "It was just one of those phases, I guess. You go through [it] and you learn a lot from it."
Cyrus and Simpson were first linked to each other in October 2019 following her split from Kaitlyn Carter. They had been spotted out and about during the lockdown.
In the same interview, Simpson explained how his romance with Cyrus started. According to him, they were friends for years before they started dating.
"I’d known her for a long time at that point," he continued. "We went from kind of being good friends to just having a lot of the same friends, to being together for a while."
Cyrus and Simpson parted ways in August. Before their split announcement, the "Wrecking Ball" singer hinted that they already broke up when she shared a photo on Instagram for her single "Midnight Sky" that she captioned, "Forever and ever no more" with black heart emoji.
Many were surprised with their split because earlier that month, Cyrus paid a sweet and loving tribute to Simpson in an Instagram Story writing, "In love with my best friend."
Also, a month prior to their split, an anonymous source told People that Cyrus was very grateful to the Aussie singer because he was very supportive of her journey to sobriety.
"She is very happy to be dating Cody. He is very much into clean, healthy living, and supports her sobriety," the source said.
Cyrus addressed their split in August 2020 during an Instagram Live. She said they broke up because they were working on themselves, but they chose to remain good friends.
"Two halves can’t make a whole and we’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be, like everybody else at this age," Cyrus said at the time. "We’ve been friends for ten years and we’re going to continue to be friends, so just don’t make it something that it is not."
