Cody Simpson and Miley Cyrus remain amicable following their split and have already moved on from their COVID-era romance.
Simpson, 25, shared new details about his breakup with Cyrus, 29, during an interview on "The Kyle & Jackie O Show" Monday. According to the "All Day" singer, they called it quits in 2020 because their lives were headed to very "different places."
"It was kind of a mutual decision between us, knowing that we were sort of going in different directions in our life," he said.
Simpson and Cyrus were first linked in October 2019 and parted ways in August 2020 after 10 months of dating.
Simpson explained that, at the time, he was heading to Australia to practice swimming in the hopes of making it to the Olympics. Though he did not qualify for Tokyo, he is currently training for the 2024 Games in Paris. Cyrus, meanwhile, released her album "Plastic Hearts" in November 2020, People reported.
"I had just started training at that point, so my life was changing a lot and I knew I was going to have to eventually move back to Australia to do it properly and professionally," he shared. "She was just going into her whole new album and was going to be going out on tour and doing all that stuff, so it was a fork-in-the-road kind of scenario, really."
While their romance didn't last, Simpson said that he enjoyed his short-lived relationship with Cyrus, and there were "no hard feelings" when they called it quits.
"We were in different places. We had a great, amazing year together and everything. We lived together during all the COVID lockdowns and stuff. We had a lot of fun," he added.
When asked whether Cyrus told him the reason behind her 2019 split from her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, Simpson said they didn't discuss that relationship. He also noted that when he and the "Wrecking Ball" hitmaker got together, they had already moved on from their past relationships.
"We'd moved on from all the past at that point. But yeah, it just was what it was," he added. "Circumstance, really."
Cyrus and Hemsworth tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in December 2018 after their on-and-off relationship spanned 10 years. They announced their separation in August 2019 after less than a year of marriage and finalized their divorce in January 2020.
Cyrus is currently in a relationship with musician Maxx Morando. The couple was photographed packing on PDA last week. They were spotted kissing and embracing each other on a sidewalk in West Hollywood Thursday.
