Costume Designer Salvador Perez Of ‘The Mindy Project’ Launches Eponymous Line On Gilt
Mindy Kaling’s on-screen and off screen designer Salvador Perez is all set to launch his debut line, The Salvador Perez Collection. The eponymous line will consist of six coats. It is a capsule collection inspired by Mindy Lahiri, the protagonist of “Mindy Project.”
The new line of Perez, the costume designer of the series will be launched Tuesday. The limited-edition collection will be exclusively available on Gilt.com starting Tuesday at 12 p.m. EDT. Each design will be worn by Mindy (played by Mindy Kaling) in an episode of the Hulu series.
All the six medium-weight coats are in vibrant colors and prints. Perez said that it goes well with the main character who is known for a love of flair, but something that set his designs apart from the more expected styles of outerwear. The designer’s coats are priced at an expensive $450 each.
Perez also said that he did not want to do something cheap and he knew that the price range is a bit high. He wanted his first collection to be a mirror to the show. Perez was even ready to do a mass-market friendly line of coats inspired by the show or a line of other clothing items later.
“One of the first things I started making for Mindy on 'The Mindy Project' was the fun, colorful coats I couldn’t find on the market. The fans have been requesting them for years, so I wanted to make them available to purchase,” Perez told Variety.
Perez said that his coats add a pop of color to the ensemble. So, he advised fans of the show to rethink prints as neutral. He gave an example that his aqua and gold coat can be paired with a black jumper and jeans.
The designer said that he wanted jewel tones that could be dressed up or dressed down. He also created a coat with the houndstooth print and metallic wool.
Mindy Kaling plays Mindy Lahiri in the romantic comedy “The Mindy Project.” It is about a New Yorker obsessed with finding love when it’s in front of her. The series’ season 4 finale airs Tuesday on Hulu.
