Courteney Cox: Matthew Perry Put 'A Lot Of Pressure On Himself' During 'Friends'
Courteney Cox is nothing but supportive of her longtime friend Matthew Perry.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Cox, 57, revealed that her former "Friends" co-star put a lot of pressure on himself to make people laugh through the iconic show, as per Page Six.
This revelation comes after Perry was criticized for his slurred speech during HBO Max's "Friends: The Reunion: special, aired May 2021. "He's just struggled for a while. I think he's doing great now," Cox told the publication.
The "Scream" actress added that Perry — who previously admitted he would “freak out” if a line fell flat — put “a lot of pressure on himself.”
“That’s a lot to think how much he relied on that for his own self-worth,” Cox said. During the reunion, too, Perry himself said, “I felt like I was going to die if they didn’t laugh.”
In the past, Perry, 52, has spoken openly about his stint with alcoholism and addiction. "It wasn't my intention to have a problem with it. But from the start, I liked how it made me feel and I wanted to get more," Perry told People in 2002 about his use of Vicodin.
Years later, in 2016, Perry admitted there were periods where he didn't remember filming some of the seasons on the hit show that had 10 successful seasons. "I don't remember three years of it. I was a little out of it at the time — somewhere between seasons three and six," he told BBC.
But, that is all in the past, and Perry confirmed earlier this month that he is writing a memoir—which will be released in November— about his time on the hit sitcom and his previous battle with addiction.
“So much has been written about me in the past. I thought it was time people heard from me,” he captioned an Instagram photo of the cover of the book, titled, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”
“The highs were high, the lows were low. But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldn’t. And it’s all in here. I apologize it’s not a pop up book,” he said.
