Critics Choice Awards: 'Squid Game' Wins 2 Trophies; Director Says 'Working On' Season 2
South Korean blockbuster hit "Squid Game" won two trophies at the Critics Choice Awards 2022 – Best Foreign Language series and the Best Actor in a Drama series for Lee Jung-Jae
The event was held Sunday at Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. "Squid Game" stars Lee Jung-Jae, Jung Ho-Yeon and Park Hae-Soo also presented awards at the event.
At the event, Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk told ET he has begun working on "Squid Game" Season 2.
"I'm working on it," the series creator told the outlet in an exclusive interview. "We will announce it soon so just wait."
The new award is an important addition to the growing number of trophies the nine-episode dystopian drama has received since it premiered on Netflix in September 2021.
"Squid Game" was one of the biggest hits of the year and drew 111 million fans so far. Many have been clamoring for its renewal since then.
Hwang did not reveal any details about the second season of the drama but said he was feeling the pressure of creating a new season for a show that grabbed the hearts and imagination of millions of fans across the world.
"Season 1 was like kind of the best in the history of Netflix. It's such pressure for me you know and I'd like to please people with waiting for season 2," he told the outlet.
Aside from Critics Choice Award, "Squid Game" actor Oh Young-Soo snagged the Best Supporting Actor Award for Television at the 2022 Golden Globes in January – the first Golden Globes Award for any South Korean actor in history. The 77-year-old actor, who played The Host or Player 001, beat "The Morning Show" star Billy Crudup and "Succession" star Kieran Culkin for the award.
The "Squid Game" cast also made history in January as the first Asians to receive Screen Actors Guild trophies for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama series (Lee), Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a drama series (Jung) and Outstanding Action Performance by a stunt ensemble in a television series.
Meanwhile, Jung said Sunday that she enjoyed visiting the set of "Euphoria" and was open to making a cameo appearance on the drama if an opportunity comes up. "I would love to," she told ET. "I visited the set of 'Euphoria' and it was weird because I felt so comfortable."
