'Squid Game' Season 2 Is Happening, Netflix Executive Confirms
"Squid Game" has been confirmed to return for another season. Netflix Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos announced the renewal of the hit Korean survival thriller at the streaming giant's fourth-quarter 2021 earnings interview held Thursday.
Sarandos was asked during the event whether "Squid Game" would have another season.
"Absolutely," he replied. "The 'Squid Game' universe has just begun."
The announcement shouldn't come as a surprise for fans, considering that "Squid Game" became the most viewed show on Netflix in 2021. In fact, Sarandos has placed the series in the category of Netflix's growing collection of entertainment franchises that have the growth potential outside the streaming service.
"Squid Game" creator Hwang Dong-hyuk also previously hinted that the series might return for another season.
"There's been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season," he told AP News last fall. "So I almost feel like you leave us no choice. But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently."
Hwang also offered a glimpse of the possible plot of "Squid Game" Season 2 in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"If there were to be a season 2, in the first season what we saw was Gi-hun is a character whose humanity is shown through or exposed in certain situations," he said. "In other words, his humanity is shown through a very passive manner. But I would think that in the second season, what he has learned from the games and his experience in the first season, they will all be put to use in a more active manner."
The first season of "Squid Game" topped the charts in all countries that have Netflix's rating system. As of October 2021, it was recognized as the most-streamed Netflix series with more than 111 million viewers around the world, surpassing "Bridgerton" with 29 million viewers. Netflix subscribers worldwide also streamed the series 1.65 billion hours in its first 28 days on the platform.
