‘Cyberpunk 2077’: Using Mods Is Fun But Dangerous, CD Projekt Red Warns
KEY POINTS
- CD Projekt Red warns users against using mods for "Cyberpunk 2077" due to a vulnerability that hackers could exploit
- The developer promises to fix the issue as soon as possible
- This means players will miss out on a lot of fan-made fun for now
It appears that the issues surrounding “Cyberpunk 2077” are endless. Developer CD Projekt Red is now warning players to avoid using mods for the time being because of a vulnerability that affects mods and custom saves.
In a tweet, CDPR said “Cyberpunk 2077” players must “use caution” when using mods because some hackers could gain access to users’ computers via these mods, allowing them to do things on their PCs remotely.
“If you plan to use @CyberpunkGame mods/custom saves on PC, use caution. We've been made aware of a vulnerability in external DLL files the game uses which can be used to execute code on PCs. Issue will be fixed ASAP. For now, please refrain from using files from unknown sources,“ the developer said.
The news comes less than a week after the game developer released official support for “Cyberpunk 2077” mods, Engadget noted. The game would’ve been a lot more fun using mods, but until and unless CDPR fixes the vulnerability it mentioned, it appears that fans will have to make do with the stock version of the game – that previously had a lot of issues in older game consoles.
Missing out
The new issue will prevent PC users from enjoying a few mods that would’ve made the game more enjoyable and perhaps more hilarious than it already is.
One mod lets players use Panam Palmer’s Basilisk tank anywhere in the game. This mod basically turns “Cyberpunk 2077” into a “GTA” game of sorts, where the player rides a very powerful vehicle and unleashes mayhem on the streets and on the fields. The tank is enormous and has two weapons – a cannon and a missile launcher that fires several homing missiles at once.
Another mod lets players play the game with some in-game companions.
“Cyberpunk 2077” puts players in the shoes of V, a character who goes solo most of the time. This mod lets other characters – Judy, River, Saul and Takemura – join V in their quests in the game. They’ll fight alongside V until certain missions are finished and they are sent home.
A third mod allows fans to play the game in a breathtaking third-person perspective. The modder even took the game’s actual graphics issues into account and produced what seems to be a hilariously accurate rendition of how V will look if the game indeed offers a third-person point of view.
The video below shows how cool the mod looks:
