A 58-year-old man died Monday after he was bitten by a venomous snake inside his home in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. According to local reports, the man was found unconscious by his son.
The incident took place at Dongarpada in Bhiwandi town, local police said, and the victim was identified as Ramdas Kongil. It remains unclear as to how the snake got inside the home and bit the man.
"Kongil, who belongs to Dongar pada village in Bhiwandi district, was spotted lying unconscious at his home. However, his son realised that his father was bitten by a snake, hence he immediately moved him to the Bhiwandi city area for the medical treatment," a police official told the Free Press Journal.
"However, Kongil was declared dead on arrival at Indira Gandhi hospital in Bhiwandi," added the official.
Authorities said a case of accidental death has been registered at Nizampura police precinct in Bhiwandi.
The whereabouts of the snake were unclear. Local media also did not reveal the type of snake that bit the man.
There have been several instances in the past where snakes have entered homes of rural villages.
Earlier this month, a 10-year-old girl died after being bitten by a venomous snake while she was sleeping. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
Local media reported at the time the victim was sleeping beside her parents when the snake, a common krait, slithered into the home and bit her.
The girl woke her parents up and told them she was bitten by something. She was rushed to a hospital where she died.
