Demi Lovato Shares How 'Cruel Intentions' Played A Role In Queer Awakening

Demi Lovato has revealed that one movie helped her realize that she was queer during her teenage years: "Cruel Intentions."

In a clip from Facebook's "Coming Out 2020" event obtained by Entertainment Tonight, Lovato recounted to co-host Tan France one particular scene from the 1999 romance drama that led to her queer awakening — Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair making out.

"It was definitely when I was young and definitely should not have been watching ‘Cruel Intentions’ but did, and it was that scene where they made out on the park lawn," the 28-year-old singer recalled on Friday.

"I was just like, ‘Oh wait a minute, I really like that, I want to try it.’ And then when I was 17 I did get down with that," she continued.

Her sexuality also played a role in her music. Lovato revealed she has songs that fans thought were about guys but whose lyrics were actually referring to girls.

"There were times I wrote songs about girls that my fans thought I wrote about guys. I’m surprised that some of them didn’t figure out that some of the songs were for certain people. I was sharing it with the world, yet I wasn’t being completely obvious with what I was talking about," she shared.

Just like Lovato, France shared his a-ha moment, and it also involved a celebrity. He said the realization came after seeing his sister's poster of a shirtless Keanu Reeves from the movie "Point Break."

"She said, 'I am going to marry him one day.' And I said, 'No, I am going to marry him!'" France recalled.

He was only 8 while his sister was 13 at the time. Neither of them had been aware of his sexuality, so his sister told him, "Boys don't marry boys, stupid!"

"So Keanu if you are watching, watch yourself!" France added.

Meanwhile, Lovato just broke up with her ex-fiancé, Max Ehrich, a few weeks ago. The split became messy when Ehrich claimed that she never told him their engagement was off and that he only learned about it through tabloids.

Lovato fired back by sharing a message about healing and being "misunderstood" on her Instagram Story.

"I knew I was healing when...I enjoyed alone time, I started responding rather than reacting," the message read. "I was okay with being misunderstood."
