Dow and S&P fall 1 percent
The Dow industrials and S&P 500 index fell more than 1 percent in early afternoon trading on Friday, with the energy and industrials sectors weighing on the market.
Energy companies fell with the price of oil. An S&P index of energy stocks <.GSPE> lost 2.3 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 96.13 points, or 0.96 percent, at 9,906.05. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 11.31 points, or 1.06 percent, at 1,051.80. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 12.62 points, or 0.59 percent, at 2,112.81.
Earlier, the government said the unemployment rate declined in January, but that employers unexpectedly cut jobs.
