Driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or above is deemed a criminal offense under the Florida DUI law. If convicted, the person is likely to face a penalty worth up to $1,000. In case the blood/breath alcohol level (BAL) is found to be .15 or higher, the penalty will reach up to $4,000 and beyond.

In April 2020, a 13-year-old California girl was killed in her sleep after a 19-year-old man driving under the influence of alcohol crashed his vehicle into the apartment. The victim, identified as Cambria Soto, was sleeping in her bedroom with her grandmother when the tragic crash occurred. The driver, Alexis Mendoza, failed to negotiate a turn, which caused his car to jump a curb and barrel through the residence. The girl was taken to a hospital but she succumbed to her injuries.
